Queen of the Grove

Lulu Peacock

Last week’s peacock was a princess, this week I am featuring the queen, “Queen of the Grove”.  This stately peacock stands just outside of one of Coconut Grove’s newest establishment, Lulu.  Lulu is a sidewalk cafe located on the corner of Commodore Plaza and Main Highway.

Queen of the Grove is sponsored by the Pat Sessions Family and was painted by Eileen Seitz.  Eileen says “It is this beauty that inspires her to paint with the colors and compositions she creates, whether it is with watercolors on paper, or oil on canvas, or dyes on fabric”.

As with all the other 2010 Coconut Grove peacock’s on the tour, this statue will be auctioned off at the end of the six month exhibition with proceeds to be donated to a non-profit/charitable organization.

The Face of Princess (Peaclock, that is)

Princess Peacock body

Where in the world can you find this lovely face?  Coconut Grove, of course.  My next stop on the 2010 Coconut Grove Peacock Tour is The Princess Peaclock”.  The Peaclock, sponsored by Valerie Davis-Bailey Insurance Agency, is located in front of their office at 3180 Commodore Plaza.

  White Peacock

The Peaclock was painted by local artist Pablo Cano.   Pablo was born in Havana, Cuba and has been a resident of Miami’s Little Havana since his arrival in 1962.  As per his Bio, he is regarded by art patrons and critics alike as one of Florida’s premier contemporary fine artists.

Of all of the peacock’s, this may be the least colorful, but I think one of the most regal.  Stop by and take a look.

Not only does the Miami Heat have Lebron, they have a Peacock too!!

As we all know, even those of us who aren’t sports fans, last nights big news was all about Lebron choosing the Miami Heat.  But did you know that the Miami Heat are also a sponsor for the 2010 Coconut Grove Peacock Tour?  I know, not as important to the sports fan but still kind of a big deal for us here in Miami.

Miami Heat Peacock

On the corner of Commodore Plaza and Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove, proudly stands “The Magic City” peacock.  This peacock was sponsored by the Miami Heat to be displayed for six months and then auctioned off with all the proceeds to be donated to a charity/non-profit organization.

“The Magic City” peacock design is the work of the artist David LeBatard of LEBO Studios.  LEBO refers to his work as Post Modern Cartoon Art Impressionist.  He says his work is heavily influenced by his Cuban American upbringing here in Miami.

“Penelopeacock” is Number Three on my Tour

Bookstore Peacock

While driving past The Mayfair one morning, I spotted this vivid array of colors out of the corner of my eye.  Turns out it was “Penelopeacock”, the next stop on my Peacock tour.  Penelopeacock stand prominently on the corner of Grand Avenue and Virginia Street, right outside the entrance to one of my favorite spots, the Bookstore in the Grove.

An interesting feature for Penepeacock that I hadn’t noticed on the others is her head.  If you look closely, there is actually a face painted on the forehead.

The sponsors are Prince Media and Rodez Gallery.  George Rodez is not only the sponsor but he is also the artist.

Next Stop on my Coconut Grove Peacock Tour – Milams Market

 Milams Head Shot

Milams Market is Coconut Grove’s “neighborhood” grocery store.  The reason it was my next stop on the tour was due to necessity.  I needed to pick up something for dinner.  Upon arrival I spotted their peacock immediately, in full display, right at the entrance of the store.  What a beauty.

Milams Frontal

“Majestic Peacock”, as it has been named was painted by local artist Eileen Seitz.  Eileen is know for the tropical nature of her work, bright colors and nature inspired paintings.

To see “Maj” up close and personal, visit Milams Market on the corner of 32nd Avenue (McDonald) and South Dixie Highway.

EWM Realtors – First Stop on the 2010 Coconut Grove Peacock Tour

Coconut Grove Peacock Tour - EWM

EWM Realtors and Casa Valentina

The Coconut Grove Peacock Tour 2010 is in full swing with colorful peacocks popping up all over town.  In the vein of the Cows of Chicago, Cincinnati Pig Gig and the Flamingos of Miami Beach/Coral Gables, Coconut Grove is the nesting grounds for a free interactive public art exhibit.  Each peacock is sponsored by a local business, painted by a local artist and has a charity or non-profit partner.  After six months of being on display, the peacocks will be sold at auction with the proceeds going to the partner charity.

This peacock is poised outside of my office, EWM Realtors, located at 3560 Franklin Ave, on the corner of Frankin Avenue and Main Highway.  EWM has sponsored this peacock in conjunction with Casa Valentina.  Casa Valentina is a non-profit organization located in Coconut Grove, that helps young women transition from foster care to independent living.

The artist that brought color and life to our peacock is Ed King.  Ed is a neo-pop artist that transforms his visions of the world into imaginative artwork.

I have to say that I am very proud to work for an organization that sees the limitless value in being involved in the local community and takes the time to do so.  Each Friday I will be featuring a new peacock from the tour.  Be sure to stop back by.

Mother’s Day Garden – from Me to You

For all the mother’s out there, or women who have inspired, I send you flowers from my garden and this poem.

My Mother Kept A Garden

016

My Mother kept a garden, a garden of the heart,
She planted all the good things that gave my life it’s start.

056
She turned me to the sunshine and encouraged me to dream,
Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem…

049
And when the winds and rain came, she protected me enough,
But not too much because she knew I’d need to stand up strong and tough.

018
Her constant good example always taught me right from wrong-
Markers for my pathway that will last a lifetime long.

013

I am my Mother’s garden.  I am her legacy-
And I hope today she feels the love reflected back from me.

The 3 Top Farmers Markets of South Miami

SpicesOne of the great things about living in South Florida is the abundance of fresh produce.  We are blessed to have several options throughout the year for locally grown and organic foods.  Here are my three favorites.

The Coral Gables Farmers MarketCoral Gables Farmers Market is a small outdoor European-Style Green Market.  It is in it’s nineteenth season and is held every Saturday from early January through the end of March.  It is located in the town center with historic Coral Gables City Hall in the background.  There is something for everyone with cooking classes, Tai Chi in the park, gardening workshops and children’s activities.

The Coconut Grove Farmers MarketCoconut Grove Farmers Market is provided weekly by Glaser Organic Farms and offers year round produce and organic products.  Every Saturday you will find and extensive selection of locally grown, organic, raw and vegan foods.  Additionally they have prepared food area where people gather to enjoy some of the best tasting raw and organically prepared items.  Who knew eating healthy could taste so good?

The Pinecrest Farmers MarketPinecrest Gardens Green Market is open every Sunday and runs from December through the end of April.  Offering numerous vendors with organic and conventional foods, plants, arts, crafts and fresh produce.  Once you’ve had your fill of the market you can wander into the Pinecrest Gardens and see why it was voted one of the top 20 parks by Miami.com.
